Â
Indications:
Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim are used for the treatment of UTIs, skin and soft tissue infections, prostate infections, pneumonia, and CNS infections. Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole work together synergistically and are usually bactericidal against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli, Haemophilus, Pasteurella, Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. And very effective against secondary bacterial infection which is caused by FMD virus in cows, Buffalo, and cattle.
Pharmacology:
Trimethoprim inhibits the enzyme folic acid pathway & preventing the reaction of the dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolate formation as a result DNA synthesis inhibits and shows a bactericidal effect.
Sulfamethoxazole inhibits dihydrofolic acid formation from PABA which disrupts the synthesis and growth of bacterial folic acid.
